SPOTLIGHT – The United Way | “Advancing the Common Good” | CLEVELAND BRICKS
Getting back to normal is something we are all ready for. As we continue to look for opportunities to help and receive support, let’s take a look at how The United Way provides assistance to our community and beyond.
Beginning
Colorado 1887, 5 diverse individuals got together to make a difference. Although they all came from different faiths and backgrounds they hit the ground running raising $21,700 in their first year. These funds went to local charities, agencies, and sparked what is now known as the United Way.
The Cause
Today, the United Way has almost 3 million volunteers, in 1,800 centers in 41 countries. This organization is the largest privately-funded nonprofit in the world. Their mission is “Advancing the Common Good” through Education, Income, and Health. To accomplish this they build schools, provide job training, and distribute health supplies.
Their reach extends to over 61 million individuals a year who have been impacted by mudslides, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and man-made disasters.
United We Stand
Programs the United Way provides include health for children (Play60), a free confidential hotline that helps connect people in need with the resources they need (2-1-1), and tax assistance (MyFreeTaxes) for low-income families that have saved millions of taxpayer’s billions of dollars.
